It’s going to be a great Rotary Year for the Rotary Club of Metro Cebu (RCMC) when it celebrates its 29th year this year.

The Club was organized on September 15, 1977 as an Extension Club of the Rotary Club of Cebu (RCC), known as the “Mother Club” by many Rotary organizations which it had helped charter. On June 3, 1978, the Rotary Club of Metro Cebu was chartered by Rotary International.

Amador “Morry” Moriles, an advertising executive who used to run Wise Advertising in Cebu City, became the first club president for Rotary Year 1978-79. He undertook such projects as the free clinic at Agus, Mactan; beddings donated to the Bohol Provincial Jail and orthopedic materials and services donated to vehicular accident victims. He served for another year for RY 1979-80.

Practicing lawyer Luis “Lou” V. Diores became president for RY 1980-81. His projects included mini blood bank at Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) costing P60,000.00, cardio vascular ward established at the same hospital, and a training van donated to National Manpower and Youth Council (NMYC).

Charlie F. Adlawan (deceased) took the helm of the RCMC in RY 1981-82. During his term, he adopted the SAPAK project as the club’s continuing project. The club also organized the RC Cebu Central with PP Lou Diores as SGR.

Guillemro “Willie” Balmaceda, who was then a businessman dealing in the construction of swimming pools, became president in RY 1982-83. His projects included Support for SAPAK in Compostela, Cebu, equipment donated to the blind masseurs of Cebu and the first “Songs to Remember” concert which raised funds for SAPAK.

Victor “Vic” Young took over in RY 1983-84. However, he got sick and served only from July-Sept. 1983. The rest of his term was taken over by Eriberto Bhoy” Melliza (deceased) who was then manager of the Philippine Long Distance Co. (PLDT) in Cebu and later vice president of the same firm.

Ildefonso “Larry” Latorena (deceased), an insurance executive, assumed the presidency in RY 1984-85. His projects included organization of RC Bogo (Now Metro Bogo). During his term, the Club presented the first-of-its-kind Journalism Award to Mr. Pedro Calomarde (deceased) who used to edit the defunct Morning Times, a Cebu daily. The award was co-sponsored by San Miguel Corporation (SMC).

Xavier Ledesma (deceased), a corporate communications manager of San Miguel Corporation was president in RY 1985-86. He later became an RI District Governor for the then District 386 (now District 3860). The RCMC Foundation was organized with P30,000.00 as initial funding during his term.

Eddie Dakay became president in RI 1986-87. A piano virtuoso, he was a great help in the production of the Club’s “Songs to Remember” concerts. He is credited for 40 members registering 100 percent attendance, sent the biggest delegation to DISTAS ’87 and DISCON projects, PETS sponsorship, a potable water system installed at Barangay Tulo-Tulo.

Pete Durano became president in RY 1987-88. During his term, the club supported 15 Share-a-Child scholars, sponsored PolioPlus Seminar and handled polioplus vaccination in some Cebu City barangays, staged the “an Evening of Chamber Music” fundraiser.

Former Cebu Vice Governor Salutario J. Fernandez (deceased), a lawyer, took over in RY 1988-89. The US$300,000.00 Mananga Watershed Project was launched during his term.

Jose “Joe” Tan (deceased), a retired Shell Philippines Inc. sales executive became president in RY 1989-90. He was awarded the “Rotarian of the Year” during his term. He later became an Assistant District Governor )ADG).

Jose Utzurrum, a businessman, became president in RY 1990-91. He was then elected chairman of the Cebu Council of Rotary Club Presidents and concurrent Chairman of the RCMC Foundation.

Jake Marques who later became Cebu Port Authority (CPA) general manager and now a businessman, assumed presidency in RY 1991-92..

Lawrence Aliac, Sr., a businessman, became president in RY 1992-93. This was the 15th year of the Club. During his term, the club hosted the Cebu Tri-Discon which raised funds for the RCMC Foundation.

Wyben Briones, a neurosurgeon, took over the leadership in RY 1992-94. This was the year RCMC were full of euphoria due to the success of the Tri-Discon hosting. PP Wyben launched the following projects: Club Reforestation Project, bloodletting, Ormoc City Relief Operation leading a team of 70 medical practitioners staying 8 days in flashflood-ravaged Ormoc, launched “Songs To Remember Part V” organized by PP Jun Satorre generating P200,000.00for the Club’s coffers enough to support new projects for the club.

Under Ramon Torres (deceased who served in RY 1994-95), a Regional Trial Court judge, the club garnered the Presidential Citation for Community Concerns.

Leandro “Jun” Ocampo (deceased), a businessman, became president in RY 1995-96. His term reaped five RI awards through its Kansas Shares with Cebu Medical Mission Project. In addition, the Club also got the RI Presidential Citation for Integrity, Love and Peace, Special Challenge of RI Prexy Herbert Brown, RI Golden Century Citation (PDG Xavier Ledesma), Rotary Foundation RI District Service Award (PDG Xavier Ledesma Rotary Foundation RI District Service Award).

Don Calvo, a sporting goods businessman became president in RY 1996-97. PP Don is one of the Club’s leaders who had an eye for sanitation. It was during his term that the Club had initiated a big sanitation project in a blighted area under the old Mandaue-Opon Bridge in Mandaue City. The facility, composed of a dozen toilets, is still working to this day and has contributed to the sanitation in the area.

 

Manuel “Jun” Satorre, a lawyer-journalist, became president in RY 1997-98. He undertook the following projects: He set up the Olango Rotary Village Corps and launched the Olango RCMC Livelihood project, initiated medical/dental/surgical missions in Olango island and Balamban, Cebu led by PP Wyben Briones with the help of the Rotaract Club of Metro Cebu Community-based, the Rotaract Club of RC University District under PP Serge Damo of SWU and the interns and doctors of Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM) care of PP Wyben Briones.

Fruto Teodorico, a banker, was president in RY 1998-99. During his term, he undertook the RCMC sponsorship of the movie premier (You’ve Got Mail) and raised P107,780 to help finance several projects, among them, the Rotary Blood Service Support Program, Project Help-A-Medical Mission in Argao, Cebu; Operation Tuli, 81 major operations at Operation Restore Hope

Mila Demecillo, a businesswoman, became president in RY 1999. Her term was one of the most colorful as it gave the club great honors when it won the Significant Achievement Award for the Millennium Babies Project, where the first baby boy and baby girl born at the start of the new millennium were given college scholarships by the club. Unfortunately however, during the term of PP Mars Pastor (RY 2001-2002), Demecillo’s membership from the Club was terminated by the RCMC Board after hearing a petition filed by some RCMC members asking for her resignation.

Cesar Vesuna, another banker, served in RY 2000-2001. He is credited for spearheading Operation Restore Hope. He was also a factor in organizing RCMC’s hosting of Distas 2001. RCMC also launched the Vitamin A project and others.

Mars Pastor, an engineer-businessman, was president in RY 2001-2002. His term was also a very colorful one. For it was at this time that RCMC was rocked by in-fighting over a petition against PP Mila. Under his leaderhsip, he led the launching of several projects for RCMC such as the initiative for the Improvement of the Maternity Ward and Delivery Room of the Cebu City Medical Center and the successful Operation Restore Hope at the Opon Emergency Hospital.

Peter Yap, a chemical engineer who is a top bank executive, was president in RY 2002-2003. Although he was working in Cebu as VP of a big bank, he was promoted to Manila cutting short his term. He was quickly replaced by Vic Balbuena, a doctor, who is completing PP Peter’s term.

Vic Balbuena, an internist, had replaced PP Peter and has been doing well to provide leadership to the Club. When he took over, more new RCMC members were inducted. PP Jun Ocampo’s untimely death happened during PP Vic’s watch.

Several projects were launched during Lambert Lim Lam Thai’s watch as the Club’s Silver Anniversary President, among them the continuation of Operation Restore Hope. The club also garnered many awards.

After Lambert Lim Lam Thai, Rudy Cabrera, a former long-time member of the Cebu City Council, took the helms of the club, followed by banker Danny Quinto.

Immediate Past President Gema Luisa A. Pido is the clubs 28th president and the second lady president of the Club.  Now, President Elton T. Cerna will take over as the 29th president of RCMC..
